‘Peculiar retirement arrangement’

The House of Assembly has moved to extend the age of reserve members of the Barbados Defence Force to 65.

Leading off debate on the Defence (Amendment) Bill, 2021, Attorney General Dale Marshall said the BDF currently has what he calls a “peculiar retirement arrangement”.

Currently, an officer at the rank of Colonel or higher must retire at 55, one at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel must retire at 50, a Major must retire at 47 and Captain or lower ranks must retire at 45.

Retired individuals can then go into the Reserves until the age of 55, but Mr. Marshall says some officers were still being accorded certain ranks and privileges after the age of 55.
