‘People’s Champ’ in pursuit of Barbados triple crown

October 29th, 2021

It’s Derby Day at the Garrison Savannah tomorrow, and ‘People’s Champ’ has a chance at triple crown glory.

Owned by Kids Syndicate and Stephan Narine-Singh, People’s Champ has won the Barbados Guineas and the Barbados Midsummer Creole Classic this year, setting up a date with an illusive title.

A win in the third and final leg – the 82nd Barbados Derby – will land the colt in the history books, as only the seventh horse to achieve the feat here in Barbados.

Trained by Andrew Nunes, the odds-on favorite will be ridden by champion jockey Rasheed Hughes who is confident that he can get the job done going 10 furlongs.

The feature event is the penultimate race seven, and it carries a $68,000 purse.

Part owner of People’s Champ, Mohamed Mohammad, who is also the Barbados Turf Club’s Liaison Officer, says tomorrow will be a special moment for him as well.

Post time is 1:00 p.m., with the Barbados Derby scheduled for 4:25.

Live coverage will be on MCTV’s channel 118.
