Plans to introduce parole to local justice system

Government is moving ahead with plans to introduce parole to the local justice system.

Speaking during Debate on the Appropriations Bill, Minister of Home Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams, revealed it’s expected to be rolled out sometime in the upcoming financial year.

Last year January, Minister Abrahams indicated that his Ministry was examining the implication of a system of early release.

Those prisoners who qualify would be allowed to spend part of their sentence outside of the prison setting.

Minister Abrahams said over the next year, there will also be comprehensive training programmes at the island’s correctional facilities.
