May 30, 2023

Under Government’s proposed National Sports Policy, it would be almost mandatory for all schools from the nursery to secondary levels to participate in sporting activities.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith, made the revelation as he moved the passing of a Resolution for Parliament to take note of the Green Paper on the Policy.

According to the Minister, the coaches attached to the National Sports Council have reported challenges completing tasks because teachers and head teachers were not interested in having their children participate in sports.

However, Mr. Griffith believes their participation will be beneficial in several ways.

The Minister says the aim of the Green Paper is to elevate sports as a central pillar of Barbadian national identity, social development and economic prosperity by 2030.

He notes members of the disabled community have also been consideration under the proposed policy.

Mr. Griffith reveals young people in correctional facilities will also not be left out.
