Prime Minister Mottley addresses virtual summit on democracy

December 10th, 2021

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says democracy must always be about people.

She made the comment as she addressed a virtual summit on democracy hosted by US President Joe Biden.

Prime Minister Mottley says the pandemic and the climate crisis have shown why democratic ideals must underpin our relations in the international community, and why we must seek to have global public goods.

She specifically noted that the current lack of vaccine equity continues to put us all at risk.

Ms. Mottley says the possibility of climate refugees also undermines democracies, not only in the countries from which those refugees will come, but the neighborhood within which those refugees will travel.

Meanwhile, she notes we must equally be concerned about the lack of democratic ideals in the international institutions to which we belong.

She says this includes giving appropriate voice to small island developing states (SIDS) or least developed countries (LDCs).
