Despite some challenges experienced at the island’s main healthcare institution, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) continues to fulfill its mandate of delivering high-quality services.
The assessment comes from Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr. Sonia Browne while updating CBC News on the operations and improvements at the QEH.
Minister Browne explained that long wait times in the Accident and Emergency Department were due to a number of factors including bed availability and doctors awaiting laboratory test results.
Dr. Browne described the implementation of a bed management system, which improved the efficiency of patients being admitted and discharged from wards. This is credited as one of the factors which shortened wait times in the department.
The Minister then provided some insight into the hospital’s future plans to improve the situation.
Minister Browne also revealed that the backlog of cataract surgeries has been reduced by 60 per cent.
She explained how the hospital achieved these results despite the roof of the Lions Eye Care Centre requiring repairs.
