Retired educator, Dame Avisene Carrington was showered with praise by the St. Giles Primary as the institution and a former student honoured the school’s longest living teacher.

Dame Avis, as she is affectionately called, is 104-years-old and was a pioneer in early childhood education, contributing significantly to primary education in Barbados.

She was the toast of the day on Thursday and was entertained by students.

A portrait of Dame Avis was also unveiled in the hall.

Principal, Gloria Caines says its vital St. Giles students understand the importance of recognising those who have assisted the school given its history and achievements over the years.

Former student, philanthropist and author, Collin Carter expressed thanks to Dame Avis who he credits for his good handwriting.

He says Dame Avis stands tall among the men and women who have graced the beloved school.

Carter, who has given back to the school in the past, had pledged to continue to do so as he cherishes his memories of his time at St. Giles.
