Small Craft Warning & High Surf Advisory

July 14th, 2022

Effective 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 16th, 2022 a Small Craft Warning and High Surf Advisory will be in effect for Barbados, for above normal swell heights.

In this case, a Small Craft Warning is issued when sustained winds of 25 to 33 knots and/or sea swells greater than 3 metres (10 feet) are affecting or forecast to affect the marine area within the next 36 hours.

A High Surf Advisory is issued when breaking wave action poses or is forecast to pose a threat to life and property within the surf zone during the next 36 hours.

The Barbados Meteorological Services says strong winds of up to 30 knots associated with a tropical wave will be affecting the island throughout Saturday.

As a result, seas along the eastern and southern coasts will gradually deteriorate becoming moderate to rough in open water with swells ranging from 2.0 to 3.0 metres. Swells are forecast to reach peak heights overnight Saturday and gradually improve throughout Sunday.

All marine craft operators and beachgoers should note the following possibilities along the eastern and southern coasts:

  • Large open water swells which may be hazardous to some vessels
  • Operation of smaller vessels may be difficult at times due to large swells
  • Some beach erosion is inevitable with most or all beaches submerged particularly below the cliffs and specifically at times of high tide
  • Possible loss of life or injury

This alert message will be updated at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 17th, 2022 or sooner if conditions warrant.
