Tax increase on sugar-sweetened beverages a critical step

March 18th, 2022

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados believes the decision to increase taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages is a clear signal of Government’s intent to create a healthier environment for its citizens.

During her Budget speech, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced the 10 per cent excise tax on sweetened beverages would double as of next month.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation has commended Government for what it calls a critical step in the battle against childhood obesity and non communicable diseases (NCDs).

The Association says it looks forward to the implementation of further World Health Organisation initiatives to reduce the startling NCD statistics, which include one in five people being diagnosed with diabetes, and a third of people between ages 25 and 70 being diagnosed with hypertension annually.
