The National Nutrition Centre joins with organisations all over the world in celebrating World Food Day 2022 under the theme, Leave No One Behind.

Barbados, like many other countries around the world, has seen major developments over the years and nutrition is no exception. Despite significant progress in the area of nutrition, there is still much to be done.

As our country tries to rebound from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important that nutrition efforts be directed at achieving health equity within our population.

In keeping with this commitment, the National Nutrition Centre wishes to continue our response to the popular request for information on the topic: Healthy Eating on a Budget. Here are some tips below:

  • Plan to use a variety of foods that are easily accessible and affordable. This includes locally grown foods and those in season.
  • Grow more of what you eat and eat those foods that you grow.
  • Include nutritious lower cost protein options more often, such as dried peas and beans.
  • Choose affordable whole food options like whole grains, whole fruit and vegetables, instead of those that are highly processed or refined. (National Nutrition Centre via BGIS)
