Prime Minister Mottley wins United Nations’ top environmental award

December 6, 2021

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has won the United Nations’ highest environmental honour, the Champions of the Earth for Policy Leadership award.

This follows a year where the Prime Minister’s plea for greater action to protect against climate change and the millions of people who are at risk of being displaced from environmental collapse, gained international prominence. Her speech at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), was especially powerful, as she urged world leaders to “do better”.

In fact, Inger Andersen, the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), called her a champion of the cause in a UNEP post announcing the award today:

“Prime Minister Mottley has been a champion for those who are most vulnerable to the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity and nature loss, and pollution and waste.

“Her passionate advocacy and policy achievements are prime examples of how world leaders can take bold, urgent action on environmental issues.”

We will have reactions to this award in future publications.
