CARICOM leaders urged to act now

February 15, 2023

Leaders from Barbados and the Caribbean have been urged to act now to mobilize the bloc in the interest of the people of the region.

Chairman of CARICOM Bahamian Prime Minister, Philip Davis says this is especially so given the various crises and threats impacting the region.

The call comes as leaders gather in the Bahamas for the 44th CARICOM Heads of Government meeting which opens this evening.

Caribbean heads are expected to discuss a range of topics including the Bridgetown Initiative, immigration, food security, climate change and COVID-19.

Of concern to Mr. Davis is the movement of illegal guns in the Caribbean.

He told an opening press conference the region has engaged countries in North America on this subject.

CARICOM will also hear from the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, the President of the Afreximbank and the President of Ukraine who will deliver a video message.

Haiti’s humanitarian and national-security crises will be high on the CARICOM meeting agenda.

Mr. Davis insists the solution to the economic and political instability there must come from within the region, with the support of other countries.
