Jamaica has recorded its first confirmed case of monkeypox.
The announcement by Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton came during an emergency press briefing this afternoon.
Dr. Tufton says the male patient presented to the public health system on July 5th, after arriving on the island 5 days earlier.
He revealed the patient has been isolated and is receiving care, and his close contacts have been quarantined.
The Health Minister encouraged Jamaicans to remain calm, and continue efforts to avoid exposure to the virus.
He says if any symptoms (fever, intense headache, muscle aches and/or rash on the skin) are experienced, isolate immediately and call ahead to a medical facility before visiting.
