Strong earthquake strikes near Guadeloupe

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck near the island of Guadeloupe this morning.

In a release, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency noted the quake occurred around 7:45 and about 40 km west-southwest of Point-Noire.

It struck at a depth of 166.37 km and was felt in 7 other CDEMA participating states – Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Lucia and St. Kitts and Nevis.

CDEMA says so far there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

Meanwhile, the UWI Seismic Research Centre has reported another earthquake also occurred in the region today – this time striking around 43 km northeast of Antigua and Barbuda.

The 3.7 magnitude quake happened at 1:14 p.m., and at a depth of 3 km.
