Met Office issues flash flood watch

December 13, 2022

The Barbados Meteorological Services has replaced the flood warning issued earlier today with a flash flood watch.

A flash-flood watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.

Unstable conditions are continuing to affect Barbados, with further rainfall accumulations of 25.0mm to 40.0mm likely in moderate to heavy showers and rain. Due to the already saturated nature of the soil, a flood watch is in effect.

Residents and visitors should be prepared for the following possibilities:
Soil erosion is likely on bared or scarred land surfaces.
Debris such as small rocks, mud and tree foliage could end up on roads and property.
Traffic delays are likely.
Water settlements on roads and fields.
Increases water levels of existing water bodies (e.g ponds etc.).
Flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads is possible.

This alert message is valid from 6:00 pm Tuesday, December 13, 2022 and will be Terminated at midnight Wednesday, December 14, 2022 or sooner if conditions warrant.
