2023 horse racing season begins today

January 2, 2023

The 2023 horse racing season begins today at the Garrison Savannah.

The first day is being dubbed “the New Year’s Raceday”, where the featured race will be the ‘New Year’s Handicap’ for West Indian-bred three-year-olds and older rated 70-52.

This 200-metre event is also open to horses three years and older, rated 51 and below.

It is scheduled for 4:50 p.m.

Now, only a few days after securing the champion trainer’s title, Robert Peirce is looking beyond today’s season opener.  He has his eyes set on winning the 2023 Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup in March.

Speaking to CBC Sports from Gulfstream Park in Florida, Peirce says winning the Gold Cup is the ultimate dream of any local trainer.

Peirce has tasted victory in the region’s biggest horse-racing event four times. His last win back in 2017 when Jalon Samuel piloted Dorsett to back-to-back wins.

Peirce finished the 2022 local horse racing season on top of the table after a late dash to the finish-line, ending with 18 victories from 192 starts, and monies totalling $368,0362.

His closest rivals, Kenny John and Andrew Nunes, had more victories, with 22 and 23 respectively but both had fewer total earnings than Peirce.

Race number one on the 8-event card today is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
