CARIFTA Recap: Barbados on the track

Barbados added more medals to its tally at the 49th CARIFTA Track and Field Championships in Kingston Jamaica on the third and final night.

Nya Brown secured bronze in the Under-20 Girls 100 Metres Hurdles, in a time of 14:63. Meanwhile, Kevin Hinds also gained bronze in the Boys Under-20 shot put with a best throw of 16.16 metres. Aren Spencer took silver in the Boys Under-20 Triple Jump, with a best leap of 15.50 metres, and Layla Haynes won bronze in the Under 20 Girls 800 Metres in 2:10:05. Barbados also captured bronze in the Boys Under-20 4×400 Metre Relay, in a time of 3:10.71.

Two outstanding performances on the track earned Barbados a gold and silver medal on day two of the games. Long-distance athlete Fynn Armstrong delivered this country’s first gold medal of the games in the Under-17 boys 3000 meters. The wining time 9:21.31.

Then, Nya Browne, Shadae Worrell, Rickyla Fagan, and Kishawana Niles put together an excellent sequence of handovers, as Barbados won silver in the under-20 Girls 4×100 Metres Relay in 45.36 seconds. It was a national junior record, erasing 45.37 seconds from the books set back in 2001.

Jamaica secured the gold medal setting a new World Under-20 Record of 42.58 seconds.
