Gold Cup arrives in Barbados

The coveted Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup arrived safely in Barbados, days ahead of the region’s most prestigious horse racing event scheduled for March 4th at the Garrison Savannah.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith, was present at the arrival ceremony and expressed his pleasure at the return of the event after a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He described the Gold Cup as a staple on the sporting calendar and thanked Sandy Lane for their continued support.

The Sports Minister believes that horse racing can be an enriching profession for Barbadians and revealed that plans are being formulated for the establishment of a horse racing academy.

Sandy Lane has been sponsoring the Gold Cup race for twenty five years and General Manager of the Resort, James Matthews gave the assurance they will continue to support it in the future.

He noted the positive impact the race has on Barbados’ tourism sector and acknowledged their partnership with the Barbados Turf Club is critical to the success of the event.
