IOC president to distribute medals at NAPSAC

March 9, 2023

The president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, is in Barbados as part of an official three-day visit that includes countries in Central America and the Caribbean.

He arrived at the Grantley Adams International Airport last evening on this inaugural visit to the island and was met by local VIPs that included Honourary IOC member, Sir Austin Sealy; president of the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) Sandra Osborne; and former BOA president, Steve Stoute.

On his itinerary, the IOC president will pay a courtesy call to the President of Barbados, Her Excellency The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason, and have discussions with Prime Minister, The Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, along with the BOA’s board of directors.

This evening, Bach, a 1976 Olympic gold medalist in fencing, will tour the BOA’s headquarters and the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Wildey, where he will unveil a new billboard to celebrate the country’s sporting achievements.

Tomorrow, he will deliver remarks at the medal ceremony of the National Primary School Athletics Championship (NAPSAC) at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex and also participate in the distribution of medals and trophies to the young athletes.

Bach, the third IOC president to visit Barbados since the BOA was recognized by them in 1955, says Barbados is embracing the spirit of Olympism and leading by example.
