Beekeeping key to food security

January 26, 2024

An American beekeeper who is in Barbados believes the special honey derived from dunks or Indian Jujube blossoms, could produce Sidr honey which could be a major economic earner and become a global indicator for the island.

A check revealed that this variety of honey fetches hundreds of dollars for 500 grams.

Geoff Humphreys is still in the research stage, but his bees have started producing the special honey.

He has found Barbados much more conducive to beekeeping than the US.

Mr. Humphreys says he also works alongside the Barbados Apiculture Association which sees beekeeping as key to the issue of food security and environmental sustainability.

Public Relations Officer Bevany Payne spoke with the Morning Report about why bees are critical to survival.

She says the profession is negatively impacted by pesticide use in other areas of agriculture, as it can sometimes kill the bees or contaminate the honey.
