Carifta Games day one roundup

Sprinter Aniya Nurse captured Barbados’ lone medal on the opening day of the 51st Carifta Track and Field at the Games in Grenada this evening.

Running in lane seven in the Under-17 Girls 100-Metre Final, Nurse secured the bronze medal in a personal best of 11.76 seconds, behind the winner Athaleyha Hinckson of Guyana in 11.44.

Unfortunately, another sprinter Kishawna Niles was fourth in the Under-20 Girls, after coming into the finals with the second fastest time. She stopped the clock in 11.66 Seconds, with Sabrina Dockery taking gold in 11.26.

It was a tough day for some of the others as well.

Ashlyn Simmons in her first year in the Under-20 division was fourth in the 1500 Metres in a personal best time of four minutes 45.86 Seconds, behind the winner, Rickeisha Simms of Jamaica in four minutes 31.94.

Aiden Moore and Kadia Rock finished outside the medals in the Under-17 Boys and Under-20 Girls 400-Metre finals respectively. Running in lane eight Moore finished fifth in 49.35 seconds, with the winner Nickecoy Bramwell of Jamaica erasing Usain Bolt’s record of  47.33, with a new time of 47.27 seconds. In the Under-20 Girls, Kadia Rock finished seventh.

In the field, Kiami-Rae Orford was tied for fifth position in the Under-17 Girls’ High jump after she failed to clear 1.60 Metres in three attempts. Her best was 1.55 Metres.
