CARPHA explores COVID-19 treatment for the region

October 29th, 2021

As drug maker Merck seeks US approval for the first pill to treat COVID-19, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) is exploring COVID-19 treatments for the Caribbean region.

This revelation was made by CARPHA’s Executive Director, Dr. Joy St. John, during the latest COVID-19 press conference, hosted by COVID-19 Public Advisor David Ellis.

Dr. St. John says while antibody treatment is currently used in some countries, CARPHA will make recommendations to member states as soon as the relevant approval is given by the World Health Organization.

During the press conference, Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anton Best responded to concerns about the effectiveness of Barbados’ current COVID-19 measures. He says the country’s daily case count would be significantly higher, if current measures were not in place.
