Dame Sandra Mason has been elected as Barbados’ first President.
She received the majority vote required for the historic position during a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre this morning.
Members of the Lower House voted 27-0, while the Senate voted 18-0, with one ballot unreturned as Senator Caswell Franklyn left the sitting after voicing his objection to the process.
Parliament recently agreed to amend the Constitution Amendment Bill to bring the Republic into force by November 30th.
