The House of Assembly has commenced debate on Amendments to Barbados’ Constitution, to deal with the appointment of Opposition Senators where there is no Opposition Leader.
Attorney General Dale Marshall says currently the Constitution provides guidance for the appointment of seven Senators by the President but fails to do the same for the appointment of Opposition Senators.
He says government feels in the interest of deepening democracy, the Constitution should stipulate that the decision be governed by some political nuances.
Mr Marshall also addressed the other proposed amendment to the Constitution which deals with lowering the age of eligibility to serve in the Senate and Lower House.
He says there is something inconsistent with a country that says at 18 you can vote but cannot consider being a representative yourself.
