Dengue cases on the decline

March 15, 2024

Dengue cases in Barbados are on the decline.

Senior Medical Officer Dr. Leslie Rollock reports that while there was a peak in January with over 500 cases recorded, numbers dropped in February.

While there were fewer deaths, there have been more hospitalisations for dengue.

Dr. Rollock attributed this to people recognising the warning signs and taking action.

The update came as the Estimates Debate continued.

Dr. Rollock says dengue is an endemic illness with two types circulating, subtypes two and three.

She adds that to stop the outbreak, adult mosquitoes that carry the virus must be killed.
