Diesel thieves targeting critical infrastructure

June 2, 2023

Diesel thieves have been targeting the island’s hurricane shelters, the Barbados Water Authority and other critical infrastructure.

Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wilfred Abrahams, made the revelation during this morning’s Post Cabinet press briefing.

He disclosed that the thieves have been siphoning off diesel from tanks at locations across the island, which were intended to power back up generators in the event of a disaster.

Mr. Abrahams says while this has been going on for some time it has increased recently.

He says as a result, in the event of an approach of a weather event, in addition to pre-positioning food, equipment and manpower, the authorities will also need to fill up diesel tanks.

Mr. Abrahams revealed that only last night, the Barbados Meteorological Services’ radar in St. Joseph was targeted.

He says he hopes anyone caught stealing diesel from the island’s critical infrastructure feels the full weight of the law, and also urged people not to purchase the stolen fuel.
