DLP at a critical juncture

July 25, 2023

After two 30-nil defeats at the polls, one of the challengers for the leadership of the Democratic Labour Party believes the DLP is at a critical juncture and has to energise its membership.

3rd Vice President, Ryan Walters says he’s been consistent in his stewardship and has been asked to come forward at this time as Barbadians want better for the party.

Former MP for St. Michael South Central, Richard Sealy, along with former MP for St. Philip West, Dr. David Estwick are the other candidates expected to come up against the incumbent DLP President, Dr. Ronnie Yearwood.

Walters, who was the DLP’s St. Michael North West candidate in the 2022 general elections says the organs of the DLP have to be enhanced and branches built up.

Mr. Walters says he has a strong branch and has been making inroads in St. Michael North West, a seat currently held by the Barbados Labour Party’s Neil Rowe.

He shared his plans, should he be elected as DLP President, on Q100.7 FM’s Let’s Talk About It programme.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sealy sees himself as the unity candidate in the race for leadership of the DLP.

While noting there’s no perfect government in the world, he acknowledged there were missteps by the DLP administration, suggesting it fell short in the area of communication.

Going forward, Mr. Sealy says the DLP has to move on and learn from the previous elections.
