Elderly abandonment continues to impact QEH

December 26, 2023

There are still too many elderly people being abandoned at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

This from QEH Communications Specialist Shane Sealy who tells CBC News there has been an increase in the number of these Elderly For Care patients who are occupying much needed bed spaces at the hospital.

He says currently five EFCs are being cared for in the Accident and Emergency Department, which is not ideal…while approximately 50 are housed on various wards.

Mr. Sealy says these patients are ready for discharge however they have no one to take them.

This phenomenon, especially at this time of year, is impacting the patient flow from the Accident and Emergency Department to hospital wards and increasing the wait time in the AED.

Mr. Sealy says QEH’s Social Services Department has been working to alert family members to collect the elderly relatives but have not been successful in many instances
