Grantley Adams International Airport: Expect flight delays

Chief Executive Officer of the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA), Mr. Hadley Bourne is advising travellers flying to the United States (US) from Barbados to expect flight delays for today and, perhaps, for the next few days.

This is the knock on effect after the Federal Aviation Administration stopped all domestic flight departures throughout the US from Tuesday night because of a glitch in the system that gives pilots pre-flight safety notices.

Although this system – Notice to Air Missions – was refreshed Wednesday morning and flights in the US resumed, scheduling has been severely disrupted. Therefore, flights intended to arrive in Barbados today, between midday and 2:00 p.m., are not likely to land until tonight or later.

And passengers booked to travel out of the island to the US today will not be able to leave as planned.

“It will have an impact on departures because those flights coming in are the ones that will then depart with the turnaround. So, those flights will normally come in to depart in the afternoon,” Mr. Bourne has reported.

He said the GAIA would be monitoring the situation to determine how impactful the delays would be.

“I can’t say they [flights] are going to be on schedule from when because as I said with the extensive delays from this morning I’m sure the air traffic system will be under pressure to get those delays up and running and flying, and I guess it would be based on a priority…and we would have no control over that.

“There will be delays. How significant it is from their end would determine the impact on our end. So, I’m hopeful and mindful that you could probably see normal coverage in terms of schedules by tomorrow,” Mr. Bourne added. (SNR)
