Healthy Caribbean Coalition weighs in on salt tax

June 17, 2023

The Healthy Caribbean Coalition has been weighing in on proposals for a salt tax in response to the NCD crisis facing Barbados, the region and other small island developing states.

There’s now a call for more evidence to show that such a tax can work to reverse the scourge of NCDs.

The concept of a salt tax was raised by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley during the just-concluded SIDS Health Conference on NCDs and Mental Health hosted at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

The Coalition’s Vice President, Kenneth Connell in an exclusive with CBC News wants more research done and data gathered before moving in that direction.

Dr. Connell spoke to CBC News as the HCC gave a thumbs up to the Bridgetown Declaration on NCDs and Mental Health, the outcome document from the Sids Health Conference.

He’s very optimistic about the new response to the NCD crisis in small islands like Barbados and says success of the Declaration has to be led with a committed and united voice.
