Independence celebrations launched with lighting ceremony at CBC

November 2nd, 2021

The bright, beautiful lights are now officially on to signal the start of Barbados’ Independence celebrations.

Community Empowerment Minister Dwight Sutherland says despite the many challenges that continue to face the island, recognising our culture and heritage reminds us of the many blessings that we have to be thankful for.

Minister Sutherland made the comments just before flipping the switch to officially launch this year’s Independence celebrations in the car park of the CBC here in the Pine, with the Sagicor Independence Lighting Ceremony.

This year’s ceremony was mostly held virtually, and showcased a number of performances, some of them from over the years.

Minister Sutherland says the lights signify the hope and blessings of the nation.

Minister Sutherland also used the opportunity to laud the efforts of the Parish Independence Committees over the years.

He thanked sponsor Sagicor Life for its continued commitment and support of the Lighting Ceremony.

Minister Sutherland also notes his ministry is committed to continuously fulfilling its mandate of developing and building the island’s communities.

He urged Barbadians to continue to play their part as well.
