Journalists boost skills at TechCamp

February 8, 2023

A programme is underway to enhance the capabilities of journalists in Barbados and the region to provide accurate information to the public during emergencies and disasters.

It has started with the launch of the TechCamp Crisis Communications workshop in Miami, Florida.

The event, organised by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency and the United States Embassy in Bridgetown, has brought together journalists, government information officers, government officials and social media influencers from the English-speaking Caribbean to provide them with digital tools and training to decipher information in crisis situations.

Deputy Director of CDEMA Kester Craig believes the workshop provides a road map for the coverage of stories for this year’s hurricane season.

He also believes it will help his organisation better appreciate the challenges journalists face in the day to day reporting of events.

Meanwhile, Public Affairs Officer with the United States Embassy in Bridgetown Donald Maynard has indicated there is a plan for continued engagement for participants of the TechCamp.
