Kensington Oval going green

May 11, 2023

Kensington Oval is going green!

The region’s mecca is to have a fully functioning photovoltaic system installed on the roofs of the Peter Short Media Centre, the Hall and Griffith Stand, the Greenidge and Haynes Stand, 3W’s Stand, and the Mitchie Hewitt Stand by year end.

In an exclusive interview with CBC Sports, Chairman of Kensington Oval Management Inc (KOMI), Damien Gaskin, said work has already started on upgrading the roofs of the structures, to accommodate the panels.

He has also indicated that the solar power generated will be sold back to the grid.

Meanwhile, KOMI has already started planning for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup which is scheduled to be played in June 2024 in the West Indies and the United States.

Cricket West Indies is currently undertaking a bid process for Caribbean Countries wanting to host the tournament, with the venues to be confirmed by July 31 this year.

Kensington Oval is expected to play a major part in the event, and therefore KOMI is actively exploring adding temporary seating in the area called the Party Stand.

Gaskin says the Oval has changed significantly since the World Cup final in 2007.
