The outstanding achievements of some of our elite athletes at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games and the Pan Am Elite Track Cycling Championships are being celebrated tomorrow, Wednesday, September 14, and on Friday this week in events being hosted by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, in collaboration with the National Sports Council, and the Barbados Olympic Association.
Sada Williams, Shane Brathwaite, Jonathan Jones and Amber Joseph have all delivered excellent performances. Ms. Williams’ achievements have been of such a high standard that she has, over the last few weeks, been invited to participate in a number of track meets. She is now available to return home and join her family and colleagues and truly celebrate her success and the successes of all our athletes.
A motorcade, press conference and reception are being held to celebrate Barbados’ outstanding medallists. The motorcade and press conference are being held tomorrow, Wednesday, and the reception at Ilaro Court on the evening of Friday, September 16.
Pan Am medallist Amber Joseph has already returned home and plans are in place for her to join Sada Williams, Shane Brathwaite and Jonathan Jones on the motorcade, which is expected to leave the Grantley Adams International Airport tomorrow around 2:00 p.m. for the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium. The press conference will also be held at the Gymnasium and will be addressed by a number of officials.
The motorcade is expected to leave the Grantley Adams International Airport and travel via Coverley, Pilgrim Road, Callender’s, Thornbury Hill through Oistins, Welches, Maxwell Road, Top Rock, then turn right at the roundabout towards Graeme Hall, then turn left at the roundabout onto the ABC Highway to the Garfield Sobers Roundabout, onto Wildey Road towards the triangle, then right onto Highway R by Carters, left up “B.E.T” hill onto the roundabout at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology, around the roundabout, down “B.E.T” hill, left onto Upton, then turn right at the north entrance to the Gymnasium, pass the Astroturf and left to the Gymnasium’s VIP entrance.
Barbadians are invited to line the route of the motorcade tomorrow afternoon to greet and celebrate the athletes. There will also be a 15-minute opportunity at the Gymnasium to interact with the athletes and to take pictures.
During the press conference, further details on the reception, and Government’s plans for sports development will be outlined. (BGIS)
