Reparations and Racial Healing Study Tour in Barbados

July 26, 2023

Prominent African leaders and dignitaries are in Barbados as part of an African Union delegation for a groundbreaking Reparations and Racial Healing Study Tour.

They were welcomed during a reception at Ilaro Court where they were treated to a sample of Barbadian culture.

The Study Tour is the result of the landmark decision of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February calling for a common African position and programme of action on reparations.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with Responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight says Barbados has shown leadership and given voice in recent times to the call for reparations.

She says while countries have heeded the call and accepted their responsibility, there’s a battle at hand where some have sought to thwart history.

The CARICOM Secretariat supports the study.

Programme Manager for Culture and Community Development Dr. Hilary Brown says the tour reconnects the CARICOM states and Africa as they advance their partnership on the reparatory justice mission.
