Barbados is beginning to see the benefits of its efforts to establish the island as a hub for medical education.

Education Minister Ronald Jones says the country was severely impacted during the economic downturn of 2007-2008.

It therefore had to find new sectors to generate income and investment opportunities.

Minister Jones was speaking during a meeting with the head of two new medical universities which will open their doors to students in the coming months.

They are the Bridgetown International University and the Victoria University of Barbados, which will both be located on Harbour Road.

They will bring to seven, the total number of medical schools in Barbados.

The minister has indicated that these will be the final two which will be allowed to set up in Barbados.

Dr. S. Washim, chairman of RUS Education which is India's largest educational recruitment firm, says the island will gain millions in investment with the addition of these new facilities.
