Jamaican police are searching for a lone gunman who shot and killed one of their colleagues at a barbershop in Westmoreland, the westernmost parish on Sunday night.

Police said that Constable Rohan Bucknor, 41, who was assigned to the Little London Police Station, was at a barbershop getting a haircut when he was approached by the lone gunman who fired several shots, hitting him multiple times.

Buknor was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead.

Last week, Jamaica police said the island had recorded a 16.8 per cent decline in murders with figures showing that 797 murders were recorded between January 1 and August 11, compared to nearly 1,000 for the corresponding period last year.
