Emergency crews were called to deal with a small fire at the Mangrove Landfill in St Thomas early Tuesday morning.
The blaze occurred around 4:20.
Smoke from the landfill quickly filled neighbouring communities.
Chief Fire Officer Errol Maynard tells CBC NEWS two fire tenders from the nearby Arch Hall Fire Station were dispatched.
The Barbados Fire Service crew worked alongside staff from the Ministry of Health to extinguish the blaze.
It was eventually put out with help of a tractor, capping the blaze with top soil.
