The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is gearing up for an influx of pediatric patients.

Head of the hospital's pediatric department Dr. Angela Jennings, says at this time of year there are usually peaks in the numbers admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.

While she's unsure why, she says this has generally been the trend at the St. Michael institution.

Dr. Jennings was speaking during a presentation of two infusion pumps to the department by the Optimist Club of Barbados central.

The pumps, valued at over ten thousand dollars, will be used to administer fluids or medication to any child who requires them intravenously.

President of the Optimist Club of Barbados Central Dionne O'Connor, says while there's been a decline in sponsorship over the years, the organisation still manages to fulfil its mandate of helping the country's children.
