Approximately 10 to 11 % of babies in Barbados are born prematurely.
And Head of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, NICU, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dr. Gillian Birchwood, says this is the leading cause of newborn illness and death.
She explains that over the years, the NICU has made several strides and has become a hub for the Caribbean.
