Barbados is looking to deepen its economic relationship with Suriname, with construction materials among the areas identified for potential cooperation.
Discussions between the two sides are focused on turning existing bilateral agreements into tangible business opportunities.
Special Envoy in the Prime Minister’s Office, Althea Wiggins, says Suriname could help to meet some of Barbados’ demand for materials needed for infrastructure development.
The discussions come as Barbados seeks to speed up infrastructure investment, while some local sources of construction materials have become limited.
But the Special Envoy says any such arrangement would have to make commercial sense, with a number of technical and logistical issues to be worked out.
Senior Minister and Minister of Energy, Business Development and Commerce, Kerrie Symmonds, says the talks are part of a wider push to strengthen economic links between Barbados and its continental CARICOM neighbour.
