As national concern over youth violence grows, children’s advocate Faith Marshall-Harris says Barbados must rethink what children are being taught beyond academics.
Marking World Children’s Day, Marshall-Harris urged education policymakers to embed civic responsibility, values-based learning, peace education and conflict-resolution skills into the national curriculum.
She believes these tools are crucial in redirecting young people away from criminal activity and rising levels of violence.
Marshall-Harris stressed that discipline remains vital to a child’s development, but noted that it must always take a positive form.
She reminded parents and guardians to ensure young people are nurtured, protected and guided with love.
The goal, she said, must be to support every child in developing into a mature, responsible adult who can contribute meaningfully to Barbados’ legacy.
