Government strengthens security ahead of Independence celebrations
Security is being beefed up for tomorrow’s historic Independence Day Parade and installation of Barbados’ second President, the Most Honourable Lt. Col. Jeffrey Bostic.
Government has requested the support of the Regional Security System to supplement local law enforcement agencies during the celebrations this weekend.
These celebrations will see Barbados mark three significant milestones: the 59th anniversary of Independence, its 4th anniversary as a Parliamentary Republic, and the installation of the second President of the Republic of Barbados.
The momentous occasion is expected to attract several Heads of State and other dignitaries from across the Caribbean region and internationally.
A release from Government says given the significance of these celebrations and the expected arrival of distinguished guests, the Government has proactively engaged the RSS to ensure comprehensive security coverage throughout the weekend’s events.
Under the RSS Treaty, provision is made for RSS member states to request support from other member states under specified terms and conditions.
In this instance, the deployment in Barbados will comprise police officers and military personnel from Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Guyana and St Kitts and Nevis.
The RSS deployment will work under the direction of local law enforcement entities to provide adequate security arrangements, ensuring that all ceremonial and celebratory activities proceed smoothly and safely.
