GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Rights of the Child Commission (RCC) has expressed profound grief and outrage over the death of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge.
In a powerful statement issued on Sunday, the Commission extended its deepest condolences to Adrianna’s family, loved ones, and the communities now mourning her loss.
“No child should ever be denied their fundamental right to safety, protection, and life,” the Commission stated, calling Adrianna’s death a grim reminder of the urgent work needed to safeguard the nation’s children.
The RCC has demanded a swift, transparent, and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Adrianna’s death, insisting that both alleged perpetrators and institutions tasked with her welfare be held fully accountable under the law. “Justice for Adrianna is not negotiable—it is a moral imperative,” the Commission emphasized.
Reaffirming its commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which Guyana has ratified, the Commission emphasized that every child has the right to life to the maximum extent possible, as set out in Article 6. It further stressed that under Article 19, children must be protected from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury, abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Additionally, Article 39 guarantees a child’s right to recovery and reintegration when they are victims of violence, neglect, or exploitation. Adrianna’s tragic death, the RCC said, is a harrowing reminder of the importance of upholding these fundamental rights without exception.
“This tragedy must galvanise systemic action,” the RCC urged, calling on communities, caregivers, institutions, and authorities to become unwavering advocates for children’s protection. The Commission stressed the importance of reporting negligence, demanding accountability, and prioritizing child safety at every level of society.
To Adrianna’s grieving family, the RCC offered heartfelt solidarity and pledged full support in their pursuit of justice. “Our hearts are with you. Adrianna’s death must not be in vain,” the statement read.
The Commission also appealed to anyone with information to come forward and assist authorities in ensuring a comprehensive investigation. “Enough is enough,” the RCC declared. “Let Adrianna’s memory ignite a nation where no child’s right to life and dignity is ever compromised.”
The RCC said the State and Government are obligated under the UNCRC to investigate this matter and that it be handled with full transparency and in strict adherence to the law.
