GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – A 30-year-old assistant accountant with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has been charged with stealing millions of dollars from the secretariat.
The money was reportedly withdrawn to pay GECOM’s polling day workers. However, it was soon realised that money was missing and the police were called in.
A total of 13 persons were detained by police and subsequently released on station bail.
The police later reported that Dikimbie Gittens was arrested earlier this week and subsequently charged for committing the offence of Larceny by Clerk or Servant.
He appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, where the charge was read to him.
He was not required to plead.
Bail was refused and the matter was adjourned to October 15.
