PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC- Police believe that the body of a woman found in a black suitcase and dumped in a pond in Sangre Grande, the largest town in northeastern Trinidad, is that of 22-year-old Candace Honore, who had been reported missing since July 1.

The police said that the discovery was made early Thursday morning by the Hunters Search and Rescue Team and that it bore chopped wounds.

Honore, of the neighbouring town of Valencia, was last seen leaving her workplace and calls to her phone went straight to voicemail.

Police said that a missing person report had been filed at the Manzanilla Police Station. A post-mortem will determine the identity of the body.

The police are also continuing the search for a 44-year-old woman, who was abducted at gunpoint by three armed men who ambushed her family at Curepe on the outskirts of the capital late on July 13.

Jankie Satie Karim was forced into the vehicle, and her husband, Saleem Karim, 45, was robbed of cash and his phone before the attackers fled in the vehicle that was later found abandoned.

Meanwhile, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) say that as the 35th anniversary of the 1990 attempted coup approaches, it is actively engaged in activities to commemorate this historic event.

On Wednesday, Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro hosted a special screening of the film Code 727 that provides a powerful insight into the events of the 1990 attempted coup, as told through the recollections of officers who were present that day.

The film is produced by the TTPS and the police said “this screening serves as a prelude to a series of upcoming activities hosted by the TTPS Museum, including public tours and screenings of the film for the general public”.

The 1990 coup attempt in Trinidad, led by Yasin Abu Bakr and the Jamaat al-Muslimeen, was motivated by a combination of factors, including dissatisfaction with the government’s economic policies, a perception of widespread corruption, and a belief that the Jamaat had popular support to overthrow the government.

During the event,  24 people, including legislator, Leo Des Vignes, were killed.
