Applications to cut down mahogany trees a concern

May 21, 2024

The Ministry of the Environment is worried about the increasing number of applications to cut down mahogany trees.

To address the situation it will soon be using a device called a resistograph to determine if removing them is the best option.

Manager of the National Botanical Gardens and Dendrologist Nigel Jones, made the comments at one of three wood lots in Kendal Woods, St. John.

Mr. Jones says he’s set to demit office soon, and calls on those interested in dendrology to take up the opportunity to study the art.

He says it’s regrettable there’s a Dendrological Scholarship sitting in the Ministry of Education, but no one seems to be interested in the field.
