Statistics show women develop heart disease at a higher rate than men, especially as they age and go through hormonal changes.
Programme Coordinator of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados Valarie Alleyne says in many instances, women experience heart attacks without knowing, and only visit the doctor when they develop major symptoms.
She was speaking as a guest on Mornin’ Barbados.
To bring greater awareness to the issue, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados is encouraging all Barbadians to wear red on February 7.
Chief Executive Officer Greta Yearwood says National Wear Red Day was first observed in 2004, under the auspices of the American Heart Association, as part of the Go Red for Women Campaign.
