The Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs is using the launch of part two of the 21st National Senior Games to highlight crime against the elderly.
Minister Kirk Humphrey strongly condemned recent acts of violence against the elderly, including a brutal attack on Senior Games athlete Janita Austin. He called on Barbadians to protect the elderly from violence.
He said the Ministry has launched a buddy system for communities to regularly check on seniors and report concerns. The Minister also called on Barbadians to stay active and get regular health checks.
He says Barbados is on the brink of becoming a “super-aged society,” with more than 21 per cent of the population over 65.
He placed emphasis on men getting regular testing.
