The Barbados Consumer Empowerment Network says it is strongly against priming consumers to accept prices on the shelves and any exploitative and manipulative framing in light of the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
However, Executive Director Maureen Holder says BCEN acknowledges the international trade dynamic of tariff impositions and the potential downstream effects on a small and open economy like Barbados.
Ms. Holder says the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry has failed to provide any clear data outlining which goods will be impacted, the extent of the price increases, or the timeline for these supposed effects.
She says this type of deliberate vagueness invites speculative behaviour, and paves the way for opportunistic price gouging, all at the expense of already burdened consumers.
